Hoarding Awareness

Posted on: 08 May 24

Next week is National Hoarding Awareness Week, taking place between 13th and 17th May.

Designed to raise awareness of the risks associated with hoarding and to promote education on hoarding behaviour, Hoarding Awareness Week is celebrating its 10-year anniversary in 2024 since the campaign first ran.

We would love as many Nehemiah tenants as possible to join in with this year’s campaign and help us raise the profile of hoarding disorder throughout our communities and society as a whole, and to ensure everyone knows there is support available if needed.

What Is Hoarding Awareness Week?

Started in 2014 by the Chief Fire Officers Association (CFOA), now the National Fire Chiefs Council, Hoarding Awareness Week is a campaign dedicated to increasing awareness and education surrounding hoarding disorder.

The theme for 2024 is Then and Now, all about reflecting on the changes over the last decade and all that’s been achieved regarding awareness and education of hoarding disorder.

The campaign’s key messages include the importance of approaching the topic with compassion and understanding, acknowledging that it is a mental health disorder and not a choice. Also, that support does make a difference to those struggling with hoarding disorder.

What Can Nehemiah Do To Help?

At Nehemiah, we want all our tenants to be able to live in safe, comfortable homes.

We are committed to helping those struggling to look after their homes as we fully understand that life can be challenging, and it isn’t always easy to stay on top of work, life, and home demands.

To help you enjoy your home as much as possible, we have a few tips for tackling hoarding in your home:

  • Tackle the smaller areas of your home first, such as the hallway
  • Focus on any items that are potential trip or fire hazards
  • Set realistic goals
  • Seek support if needed

We understand the impact hoarding can have on people’s homes and are here to help in any way we can. We never judge and we always listen.

For further advice or information on Hoarding Awareness Week and how you can get involved, or for support with looking after your home, you can contact your Housing Officer or call us on 0121 358 0966 or email contact@nehemiah.co.uk and we will be happy to help.
